painting things

Having a boy (enough said) and a girl that is too young to get super crafty yet, I tend to get my crafting fix on my own for the time being.  Mark does a little homeschool crafting, to ensure fine motor skill development, but it is not something he usually gets excited about, or something I really plan as special fun activities.

Until the other day, when Mark came in with a squiggly stick and asked if he could paint it like a snake.  “Yes!” I exclaimed.  I quickly whipped out some paints, brushes and newspaper and got him set up.  Meanwhile, Susie comes up and asks, “Mom, I paint dis?” and holds up a rock.  Sure, Susie!

The whole time I kept thinking of the wedge of wood shaped like a bunny that I found as a kid.  I painted it as brown and white spotted bunny, and my mom still has it.  I was so proud of that thing.

His snake turned out pretty and colorful and he played with it for a few days until it broke Susie broke it in half.

Susie was entertained for quite a long time, in deep concentration.  She painted layer upon layer until it was all mixed into one medium green tone.  After it dried, we put eye stickers on it and called it her pet rock.  It is lost now, of course, but it was fun while it lasted!

Painting ordinary items is fun and sparks the imagination!

thrift junky chronicles {17}

the thrift store sucked me in, yet again.  I went in to look for one thing: wooden crates.  I should have known, I don’t usually see them at thrift stores.  But I need one more for my bedroom wall and I couldn’t bring myself to buy one from a local gal off Etsy unless I hunted around for one myself, trying to eliminate the middle-woman.  One more place to check then I will have to suck it up and get it from Etsy.

Anyway, this is what I came out with…

DSC_0892

Assorted vintage sheets $5/each (one was 50% off)

The top sheet with the coral, beige and turquoise will become my shower curtain.  I just made a shower curtain out of a vintage sheet but can’t sell myself on the colors in it.  Anyone who knows me, just pipe down about me changing my mind, okay?  At least I figured it out this time before the whole room was stuck in the color scheme.

DSC_0894

That bit of ruffle you saw in the top picture and a snippet of it above, is a vintage slip!  I actually got it to wear and have it peek out of dresses, but I think it might have too much damage – I might just have to put it on my dress form and have it sit there and look cute.  It was only $5, so I’m okay with that.

 DSC_0911

A great vintage lamp and a neat navy baking tray which will probably find their way into my Etsy shop.

Baking sheet ($2) for art display (project to be shared when I find a second baking sheet!), San Fran map ($.99) for a friend, cute wood bowl ($2, and 50% off), and a sweet teacup ($1).

Checkout the freeways in San Fran area where my dear friend moved…

I feel for you, girl.  It is in the mail, it stressed me out just looking at it.  =)  BTW, I live in WA and I couldn’t find a WA map at my own thrift store, but I happened to find a CA one of your nearest big city?  Seriously?  You are spoiled.  =)

I missed a couple days this week here on the blog because I was doing this…

DSC_0883

Homeschool had seriously suffered while I was working.  Now that I cut back my hours at work, we got back into the full routine every day this week.  I found a great preschool resource and downloaded some worksheets.  We worked on cutting and matching and did lots of reading.  So glad we are back in the swing of things.

Well off to run some work errands.  Have a great weekend!

gift ideas { hop scotch mat }

This is one of the gifts I made for some little friends for christmas…

DSC_0062

It’s a handmade hopscotch mat to provide hours of healthy, energy-burning play indoors…

DSC_0036

DSC_0040

DSC_0047

It was super cheap and easy to make (I roughly used a tutorial I pinned on Pinterest).  For the mat, I bought a 4’ x 15’ canvas painters drop cloth from the hardware store for less than $10.  I drew out the hopscotch pattern using a sharpie and a ruler and a 1’ square template.  Then I cut off the excess length of mat and hemmed that edge.  Then I used fabric paint and a 5-cent sponge paint brush to paint on the numbers.  I made three little beanbags (there are three girls) for them to toss.  Done!

DSC_0028

It was easy, is very healthy and great for moms when we can’t say “go outside!”  It has been used a few times already.  I imagine it would be a great gift for kids who live in apartments… or in the Pacific Northwest where even if you live on a couple acres, sometimes the rain makes it seem like you might as well live in an apartment since you never get to go outside!  Sorry…  Can you tell what the weather’s bee doing here???  Anyway, I had to share this sweet gift for any time of year, for less than ten bucks!

more play, less doh

Have you ever made play doh?  A while back I called my mom for a recipe to make some for the kids.  It is really basic…

Photo_BE10C9F1-4CF5-04B7-CE2B-6EE591087232

I forgot to put the secret ingredient in that picture!  Kool-Aid!!!  It makes it smell delicious, and makes it so colorful!

Photo_39BCD641-37B7-7B03-147E-06AAA78FA513

After I bought the Kool-Aid, I decided to make a couple more batches so I had to use the food coloring.  It is the yellow and green; not as bright and just smells like flour.  :(  Trust me the Kool-Aid rocks.

They did not love waiting for me to take pictures of it for the blog before they were allowed to play with it.  =)

WP_000681

They had stuffed all our store bought play doh into one of the play doh toys and it dried hard as a rock and we couldn’t even open the toy, let alone get the play doh out.  The whole thing went in the trash.  But after a while I needed something to occupy their little hands again so I decided to make some more.  Though I had been dreading making it, I finally did it and was pleasantly surprised!  It was so easy!

Recipe for Homemade PlayDoh

    1 cup flour

    1/2 cup salt

    1 teaspoon cream of tartar

    2 tablespoons vegetable oil

1 packet Kool-Aid (for color and scent!)

    1 cup water

1. Combine all ingredients in medium saucepan over medium heat, stirring constantly.

2. Initial texture will be like pancake batter.  When texture suddenly changes to that of sticky mashed potatoes, remove from heat.

3.  Dump out onto breadboard, cool, and knead a little.  Store in airtight containers.

I gave each kid one container with their name on it and we drew names for colors.  They decided to keep the colors nice and not mix them (after my own heart!).  They have loved it and they say they like it better than the store bought kind.  It smells delicious!  I feel like it doesn’t dry up as fast as store bought.    I love how the house smells all fruity when they play with it.  Each one of those containers is one recipe.

For toys, I am not buying any more plastic PlayDoh toys that clog, break, and bend.  I purchased these a while back at Ikea for the kids’ kitchen and right now we are keeping them with the play doh instead  =)  …

The DUKTIG 7-piece baking set is $9.99 and the DUKTIG 5-piece kitchen utensil set is $3.99.  They’re going to last longer than the PlayDoh stuff ad they’re about the same price.

Am I the last one to jump on the homeade play doh band wagon?!

fragments from this week

so far this week I have repaired and finished what I broke last week; the sweetest little pin cushion you ever saw in your life…

DSC_0031  DSC_0030

I told you so.  ;)

These little footed milkglass bowls (and a larger size as well) are at thrift stores pretty frequently… I am on them like a blood hound so I can make some of these for my sale.  This one is all mine.  That globe in the background; I got it at a yard sale for $1… a score for my sale?  Not so much, I made the mistake of putting it in my bedroom.  I think it has to stay.

In rare homeschool news, =) I came up with a daily schedule!  This is miraculous for me.  I got a curriculum and didn’t really love it, especially since we’re only in preschool.  Here is my format…

DSC_0004

The letter craft looks like this today because I was lazy…

DSC_0005  DSC_0008

The idea is to familiarize the child with the shape of the letter. I usually do something like glue scraps of paper to fill in the letter, or something like using macaroni noodles to fill in the letter “M” for macaroni, or build a letter out of straight and curved lines.  When lazy = coloring it in works just fine.

The word for the day was “good” so we sounded that out and he copied it down and drew a “good” thing; him sharing his helicopter toy with a friend.  =)

I also added in building.  Every day we are going to build with blocks, play dough, toothpicks and gumdrops, etc., focusing on all the letters for review.  Mark made some great letters…

DSC_0003

O, A, M, T, P.

Then of course reading.

DSC_0034

I even put the books on the wall in the homeschool area, and still forgot to do reading every day, so now I have it written down.  I need lists.  For vocabulary, I plan on just pointing out the meanings of words in the reading, as needed.

So that’s my new homeschool schedule.

In other random news… I got bright yellow rubber boots and I love them…

DSC_0011

I even wore them to a wedding last weekend…

IMAG0139

I happened to be shooting at the wedding and it happened to rain most of the day, otherwise that would have been super weird, instead of just weird.  =)  That photo of me is courtesy of my pastor, Ron Sallee.  Thanks, Ron!  I can’t wait to share the photos with you all; I am still sorting through about 700 images and editing.  Fun stuff!

Last but not least, my Shadow came back.  Almost a year ago, I leased out my horse, Shadow, because I wasn’t giving her the time she deserved.  But a couple weeks ago, the girl leasing her broke her knee and will not be able to ride again, so I am finding Shadow a new home again.  I had to share this shot from the other morning…

kangaroo farm

Last week, Mom treated me and the kids and my niece to an outing at the Outback Kangaroo Farm in Arlington.  We had a tour guide, one of the owners, Joey Strom, who started us off with a talk about Lemurs who were crazy leaping machines, jumping from the fence, to Joey, to the fence, to Joey.

DSC_0722

Then we started a walking tour of the farm.  First we got to feed a llama and an alpaca that looked a little grumpy to me…

DSC_0728

They did like giving ‘kisses’ if you held their alfalfa pellets in your pucker and mustered up your courage…

DSC_0734

Susie wasn’t sure about them either.  In fact, the moment I snapped this next picture, Mom was making her pet him and Susie kept saying, “Owie.  Owie.”  That is her current word for anything she doesn’t like.

DSC_0738

There were various kinds of birds running all over the place…

DSC_0742

I do not understand how peacocks hide all those beautiful feathers in their tails!

And this big mama was so sweet chasing after her little chicks who were scattering all over the place…

DSC_0793

And there were sweet, lazy little peacock chicks…

DSC_0805

The baby miniature donkey was a favorite of all the kids, even with Susie…

DSC_0789

DSC_0754

DSC_0762

There were grumpy emus and ostriches (you didn’t have to ask me twice no to touch them)…

DSC_0773

Oreo was also grumpy, but super cute to look at…

DSC_0766

Some big rodents; don’t ask me what they are called…

DSC_0826

Susie decided the wallabies were her favorite…

DSC_0830

DSC_0844

She might have cried when he hopped away from us.  Then she might have consoled herself by trying to ride a turtle…

DSC_0841

By this time, Mark was pretty much over the whole thing…

DSC_0860

I loved that my niece had to stop and talk to all the animals…

DSC_0868

By now it was finally time to see the kangaroos!!  The other owner, Ray had to wake up the big one from his nap so he could give the kids some hugs…

DSC_0822

DSC_0877

Can I just say, kangaroos are super weird looking…

DSC_0879

And have quite a lot of character…

DSC_0884

All their weirdness didn’t stop Miss Maddy from chatting them up…

DSC_0892

I really wanted a shot of a peacock in all its glory, and thought I wouldn’t get it until we headed to the car and he decided to put on a little show for us…

DSC_0896  DSC_0898

Beautiful!  So unique and brilliant.

So all in all, the Kangaroo farm was a unique experience, and I would definitely recommend it if you need to shake up your routine!
