a rich and glorious tidbit

I came across a verse this morning which really struck me.  Lately I feel like I fail to get everything done that I need to accomplish, remember everything I need to remember, be the kind of mother I wish to be, grow in ways I see that I need to grow…

But then I read Ephesians 1:18 where Paul says:

I pray that your hearts will be flooded with light so that you can understand the confident hope He has given to those He called – His holy people who are His rich and glorious inheritance.

I -–my lowly self-- am a “rich and glorious inheritance” to -–God???  Is it just me, or does that seem messed up?  And also, He has given us “confident hope.”  He has already done it.  Here, Paul prays that we could understand that.  So we are a rich and glorious inheritance to God who has already given us a confident hope in Him.  Seems pretty weird.

But I know that it is not messed up.  It is the amazing grace He has given us.

Romans 8:30 says:

…having chosen [His people] He called them to come to Him. And having called them, he gave them right standing with himself.  And having given them right standing, he gave them His glory.

He chose us.  He called us.  He made us holy.  He gave us his glory.

So what’s left for us to do?

Get everything right?

Get everything accomplished?

Be supermom?

Know and remember every single need of every person we meet?

Meet every single person’s needs?

Grow and excel in every possible way?

No.  Just accept His gifts.  Accept the glory He bestows on lowly us.  Accept Jesus and walk with Him and He will do the rest.  He will help you to do the things He needs you to accomplish, meet needs He needs you to meet, and grow in ways He needs you to grow for His kingdom.

I see that it’s not about me and what I can do at all.  At least not on my own.

Because let’s face it… God is smart – He knows that if it were any harder, if He didn’t do all the heavy lifting for us, well… we would fail.

Thank you Jesus for making the way!  Amen!

broken hearts

Lately, trying to take control of God’s timing has been the culprit of much anxiety for me.  Both in my own life and in many friends’ lives right now, stressful, ugly, sad and lonely situations abound.  Being a female, I tend to take these worries upon myself, agonize over them, feel for the person and stress myself out about it.

I tend to come up with a plan in my tiny little head to solve everyone’s problems.  Then I become fixated on that plan, and pray for God to make it happen because it is, quite obviously, better than what he is doing about it which seems to be nothing.

Reminds me of when I was little.  My mom said I would need something; a toy, an item of clothing, a craft supply… we could go to store after store, and I would not buy anything because it would not be the exact thing I had pictured in my mind.  And even if that that exact thing I had pictured in my mind did not actually exist, I was still not interested in any substitute.  I would just be crabby and buy nothing.

That is how I am treating life’s situations, and my hair brained solutions.  How sinful I am!  God is GOD, who am I to even bring him a plan I cooked up?  God is gracious and merciful, though, and he does tell us to make our requests known to Him.  He knows us, he knows our emotions and our hearts and our minds, and he desires us to seek and know Him and His Son.

This week something disheartening happened.  Amongst all that stress I brought upon myself on behalf of me and others, a little portable at my church that hadn’t been loved since the 70’s, which I had begun fixing up was broken into and vandalized.  I started fixing it up probably over a year ago.  I had the youth group kids help me strip wallpaper, make curtains, paint the walls, doors and trim and decorate one room.  We use the room for My AWANA girls and they loved it.  The vandals broke in through a window that didn’t lock, tipped over my book shelf full of supplies, dumped my leftover paint all over the walls, doors, trim, floors, bulletin board, tables and chairs, and used my leftover spray paint to draw giant male anatomy on my schoolhouse chalkboard, in the hallway and in another classroom.

Are you kidding me God?  This?  Now?

Standing in that room, even after the youth group had cleaned up what they could and put things back in place… looking down, I took note of the floor.  The FLOOR.  The floor is what started the redecorating process in the first place.  It was heinous harvest green and gold, with highlights of 40 year old scum.  After I fixed up that first room, the board of trustees wanted me to go ahead and finish the whole thing, and said we could even get new flooring.  We tore out the nasty old carpet, but it has taken forever moving forward with getting the new carpet installed… Between getting quotes, picking stuff out, finding out we can’t do that kind, picking out another kind, getting another quote and on and on.  I would get really frustrated at myself when I thought about it, that I hadn’t gotten it done, so I could proceed with all the other improvements.

But standing in that room, looking down at the bare floors with paint splattered all around the room in thick puddles… I got a tiny glimpse into God’s timing.  It might be tiny, but it is a true glimpse of God’s wisdom and grace.  I can’t imagine the stress I would have felt if this had happened to our brand new carpet that I had just encouraged the church to buy.

In this, I was reminded that whatever ideas I may have, and however long He seems to take, God does have a plan, and I know that He “works all things together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.”  -Romans 8:28.  I am going to REST on that.  I need to bring my worry and stress to God and not try so hard to conjure up my own plans, but instead, soften my heart and be ready for God to use me to accomplish His plans.

If you, like me, feel that your heart is broken into a million little pieces… know that Jesus saves those broken pieces.  He will put your heart back together again, if you trust in Him.

ramblings of my heart

Have you heard the common Bible verse, “Let not your heart be troubled…”?  I have wondered before how one could “let” their heart not be troubled… like flipping the ‘worry’ switch to ‘off’.  Impossible, right?    The verse is found in John 14, and goes on to say, “You believe in God, believe also in Me.”  Jesus was speaking to the disciples, telling them he was leaving and they could not go with him.  The disciples were confused and distressed and Jesus’ words were calling them, and are calling us still today, to have confidence in Him and in God’s plan.

Recently, some dear friends were getting toward the end of their apartment lease, and needed to relocate closer to church and better schools, but they were not going to be ready to do that yet when their lease ran out.  We gave them a ride to church for a couple months and would cook a meal (I use the word “we” very loosely here – Sandy is a far superior cook than me =) and fellowship with them every Sunday.  After dropping them off every Sunday, I would pray that God would prepare us to help them however we could and to use us for His work; even though we didn’t really have extra money, and I wondered how we would be any help at all.

Ephesians 2:10 says, “For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.”  A while back, Mark started sleep walking and I was afraid he would fall down the steep stairs, so I moved him downstairs into Susie’s room.  Hmmm.  Sandy and the girls needed a place to stay and we have an empty bedroom.  We forged on without hesitation and five people crammed into our extra bedroom.  God had answered my prayer and prepared our hearts; even though people around us were warning us that this was crazy, we couldn’t afford it, or it might ruin our relationship with our friends.

But since God prepared this work for us to do, He worked it out.  Our hearts were not troubled.  They moved in.  The girls started school.  We cook together, eat together – live together. Sandy probably just thinks we are helping her, but she is the strongest, most hardworking and faithful woman I know and I am sure that she is helping me grow as well.  I hope a lot of her qualities will rub off on me.  =)  And with Sandy closer to our church family, she has been surrounded by help and support as God’s love flows through His people.

Even though your mind may worry and fear and tell you to shy away from something, pray for His will, and pray for him to prepare your heart to do what it is that He has prepared for you to do.

153.8 & 32.8

That is my weight and my body fat percentage as of yesterday! I think I might be seriously losing my mind to publish that information. I am doing it in hopes that it will motivate me. You see, my pain-in-the-butt friend challenged me to do the 30-Day Shred with her. I already had the workout DVD (I actually purchased this set of 3 of Jillian’s videos and love them all), but I hadn’t been doing it on a regular basis. I was asking Kristel if there was a diet that went along with the 30-Day program or if it was just doing the workout every day for 30 days. It is just working out. I am now doing it every day. If I don’t, I have to pay Kristel $5 for every day I skip. And vice-versa. That should be motivating.

Also, I am revisiting the book, The Diet Alternative by Diane Hampton. I have a love/hate relationship with this book. I hate the way she replaces words in scripture with her own words (replacing ‘sin’ with ‘binge’ for example) to get her point across. I get why she does it but tweaking scripture rubs me the wrong way. But I love the principles. The description of the book is not very accurate; you can eat whatever you want but not ‘whenever’ – only when you’re hungry; as in your stomach is growling; and only until you are ‘satisfied’. It is a quick read and easy to follow… here is an excerpt…

In gluttony, rather than loving God with the whole mind, a person begins to eat when he is bored or worried. Rather than loving God with all his soul, a person begins to eat when he is frustrated or angry. Rather than loving God with all his heart, he begins to eat when he is lonely, depressed, or defeated…

Okay, that’s me. I eat when I am stressed, frustrated, or bored… Instead of eating during those times, I need to pray when I am stressed or frustrated and dive into God’s word when I am bored!

So anyway, hopefully in 27 days (today is day 3) I will be back with two slightly smaller numbers for my post title. =)

Encouragement in Obedience

I was snooping around on the Anderson Crew’s blog when I came across this post.  Usually Mrs. Anderson encourages us and shares her activities with us, but this post was actually written by Mr. Anderson.  What an encouragement it was to me.  It is about stepping out in faith and obeying God, and worry later about the “whys” or “hows” or whether or not you can handle it.  If God only gave us things that were easy to check off our list on our own, would we really see His power?  He gives us more than we think we can handle so that we will seek Him and know His power and love for us.  I needed that and I thought you might be encouraged by it, too.  Our God is powerful!  You have faith?  Step out.  Even though I summarized, go read the whole post.  You’ll be glad you did!

I’m finishing up one last giveaway item and I hope to post the giveaways tomorrow!  Happy day!  =)
