And I need to get posting again so I'm forging right ahead! I have been gone quite some time. Spent a lot of time thinking about this blog... To blog or not to blog. The problem is I can't bring myself to quit... But there are aspects of it that stress me out the door too (ie: time to anything after homeschool these days, making sure my blog glorifies God, having pictures as good as my blog land photography roll models, posting often enough, perfectionism and a major struggle with contentment these days). Some of that is Satan attacking my insecurities, and some is just dumb stuff to waste worries on. So I guess I'll keep at it. For now. Ill try to share scripture and faith when I feel the tug of the Holy Spirit, I won't worry if I don't post daily, I'm just gonna go with the flow and blog when it brings me joy. I think this may be the second time I've had this conversation with myself about this blog. Call me hardheaded. <div><br></div><div>And now without further ado, a farmhouse beauty for you! This is a local extreme fixer on the market. It's the ones that need the most work that make my heart go pitter patter. <3</div><div><br></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiYDrV_4gKNsWfjgMaJT-u2ZJ8zVe64YTGU62s5OurmMDqy0lu-N3IL4CLk0l0mpaYB4yhre1vaoszZAbgjIOzF1P00R1zjlTr0VOM7IzI0JQXkfTkX9yNYxJ8Ck6b2m_lM9bYTFXrZ4wo/s640/blogger-image-1901953998.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiYDrV_4gKNsWfjgMaJT-u2ZJ8zVe64YTGU62s5OurmMDqy0lu-N3IL4CLk0l0mpaYB4yhre1vaoszZAbgjIOzF1P00R1zjlTr0VOM7IzI0JQXkfTkX9yNYxJ8Ck6b2m_lM9bYTFXrZ4wo/s640/blogger-image-1901953998.jpg"></a></div><br></div><br></div>Tasha B.http://www.blogger.com/profile/05644123124805798981noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9191331405854961627.post-82475394714040865622013-10-26T07:30:00.000-07:002013-10-26T07:30:00.299-07:00reveal { susie’s room }<p>I’ve been painting again. Anyone who knows me in real life is probably laughing at my use of “again”… I know it seems I never stop painting around here. </p> <p>This past few months I’ve painted Mark’s room, an entry and front door, the house exterior (hired out), Mark’s bathroom, Susie’s room and our master. Phew! That makes it sound like I have a problem or something. Anyone else suffer a painting addiction? Oh, and don’t even get me started on painting <em>furniture</em>!</p> <p>When I paint I make a huge mess. Of course the room gets torn apart, but I also take off all the baseboards, door casings and window trim because I hate getting paint on them. Nobody around here seems to mind my mess…</p> <p><a href="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-2PlEEwHXnos/UmuL00LgF6I/AAAAAAAAMX8/zTpoYuzsA4o/s1600-h/DSC_02467.jpg"><img title="DSC_0246" style="border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px; border-top-width: 0px" border="0" alt="DSC_0246" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-T6CmngO-6G4/UmuL1keg86I/AAAAAAAAMYA/0mczx4SJVAY/DSC_0246_thumb4.jpg?imgmax=800" width="731" height="498"></a></p> <p>And when I get started they usually ask why I am doing this? And then when I’m done, they say “Yay!” In the case of the hubby, maybe in not so many words. ;)</p> <p>Anyway… Here is the happy outcome of Susie’s recent room re-do that had me and her saying “YAY!!!”…</p> <p><a href="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-6kQ11JTvElo/UmuL2MBAmBI/AAAAAAAAMYM/4MO12jBjNeQ/s1600-h/DSC_035010.jpg"><img title="Girl's Room on willworkfordecor blog" style="border-left-width: 0px; I’m pretty in love. Most importantly, Susie said, and I quote, “How did you know I wanted my room like this??” <strong>Score</strong>.</p> <p> </p> <p><strong>Some sources:</strong></p> <blockquote> <p>Wall color: Benjamin Moore’s Palladian Blue #HC144; idea from <a href="http://www.pinterest.com/pin/177681147772256110/" target="_blank">this pin</a>. It shows in some of my pictures as baby blue and some pictures as a green-blue; in real life it is more green-blue. It’s gorgeous. Say Wha?<p> </p> <p>Okay, so not too long ago, I featured this <a href="http://www.willworkfordecor.blogspot.com/2013/10/farmhouse-friday.html" target="_blank">sweet little brick farm house</a>, found in my travels, on my farmhouse friday feature: </p> <p><a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-8a5lHND5jUo/UmrpGs_Aq9I/AAAAAAAAMXk/MaY2YbtkPLI/s1600-h/blogger-image-872549264%25255B5%25255D.jpg"><img title="blogger-image-872549264" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px" border="0" alt="blogger-image-872549264" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-Izz7E-agJpA/UmrpHEQgzGI/AAAAAAAAMXo/2LuJ-hekj5I/blogger-image-872549264_thumb%25255B3%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="725" height="709"></a></p> <p>Well today you get to take a tour of this house, via the lovely world wide web, courtesy of Redfin and John L. Scott Real Estate. Have you guys ever played around on Redfin? It’s a great website that scoops up all the houses for sale via real estate companies (and people can post FSBO as well), and brings them to you all on one fully searchable website with loads of helpful neighborhood/school info, stats and statistics, and photos too. </p> <p>Plus, you get to snoop inside sweet digs. Did I just use the word “digs” correctly? </p> <p>So anyway, here is the <a href="http://www.redfin.com/WA/Cle-Elum/871-Teanaway-Rd-98922/home/16796435" target="_blank">link to this home on Redfin</a>, so go and take a tour of this amazing little gem. I’m calling it little even though it’s more than twice the size of my place. It’s just because it’s so dang cute! The bones in this house are pretty amazing. Of course there are things that I would change, paint, and ironically, make a little <em>more</em> “farm housey” due to some of the circa 1990 updates in the bathrooms mainly. The kitchen is pretty swoony. And that last picture KILLS me. Leave a comment and tell me what you think of one of my favorite homes.</p> <p>I’ll be back tomorrow with another room reveal post! For reals this time. The post is 90% finished!</p> <p>Blessings!</p> <p>PS. Of course, I the lowly little blogger, am not affiliated with RedFin or John L. Scott in any way.</p> Tasha B.http://www.blogger.com/profile/05644123124805798981noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9191331405854961627.post-23547807344409299592013-10-18T18:24:00.001-07:002013-10-18T18:24:50.842-07:00farmhouse friday { 9 }<p> </p> <p>While picking up the kids from my mom about an hour away (Mom lives out of town so we meet in the middle) (now I’m gonna have that country song stuck in my head), I was rescued from failing you on this farmhouse Friday!</p> <p>I pulled a u-turn after I drove past this…</p> <p><a href="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-M36cvdDlWmc/UmHfXqAwzsI/AAAAAAAAMXM/IxEfRvK7Frg/s1600-h/photo%252520%2525281%252529%25255B6%25255D.jpg"><img title="photo (1)" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px" border="0" alt="photo (1)" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-o_thnFyenic/UmHfYeU3ZOI/AAAAAAAAMXQ/kvt_M2Mxbts/photo%252520%2525281%252529_thumb%25255B4%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="701" height="706"></a></p> <p>This little gem hides just off the highway, behind a bramble bush (I don’t know what that is but it sounds like a Southern way of saying sticker bushes). People are living in another place behind it so I’m not sure what the status is. </p> <p>But the status should be a little love and a little elbow grease! </p> Tasha B.http://www.blogger.com/profile/05644123124805798981noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9191331405854961627.post-13458737219847100252013-10-17T14:20:00.001-07:002013-10-17T14:20:32.965-07:00reveal { a little bathroom }<p>Over the past couple weeks I have painted and refreshed our upstairs bathroom. We have a pretty small house (1060 s.f.), and the upstairs is just a bedroom and a powder room, and a short ceilinged powder room at that. The definition of tiny. The bedroom is Mark’s, so he’s usually the only one using this bathroom.</p> <p>The walls were previously painted Tapestry by Ralph Lauren which is a medium tone of rust with a touch of rose. It’s a pretty color, which I used in a wide hallway at the <font style="background-color: #ffff00"></font><font style="">MIL’s</font> place and we still love it there, but it was doo dark and intense for this tiny bathroom. So I added a couple coats of a light gray, and brought in some boy-friendly, simple accessories to finish off the room with some interesting pops of color.</p> <p>I apologize for the lighting – you’ll see how tiny it is- it’s very difficult to get good shots in here. I even brought in my flash to brighten it up, but it’s a little harsh. Regardless, I’m fighting perfectionism, so… Have a look anyway!</p> <p><a href="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-oy0nPfPPc6M/UmBUZbi9HBI/AAAAAAAAMT0/PKH5kHOASHA/s1600-h/DSC_0319%25255B12%25255D.jpg"><img title="DSC_0319" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px" border="0" alt="DSC_0319" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-5-1fu_JP-qY/UmBUZ0vlv8I/AAAAAAAAMT8/JpI36OlQuc8/DSC_0319_thumb%25255B9%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="354" height="533"></a> <a href="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-PFuowS2iyys/UmBUa7JqmDI/AAAAAAAAMUA/hEtoYRsqhbc/s1600-h/DSC_0321%25255B6%25255D.jpg"><img title="DSC_0321" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px" border="0" alt="DSC_0321" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-kXkfiD5ot6Y/UmBUbQewuuI/AAAAAAAAMUI/bczIg7WKf48/DSC_0321_thumb%25255B3%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="351" height="530"></a></p> <p><a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-nUz93DNhEQg/UmBUcCcE-qI/AAAAAAAAMUU/cF_tbR9-hyI/s1600-h/DSC_0325%25255B5%25255D.jpg"><img title="DSC_0325" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px" border="0" alt="DSC_0325" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-wkKCr-_EVf8/UmBUci2ICpI/AAAAAAAAMUY/qgjRGOsRpsc/DSC_0325_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="725" height="501"></a></p> <p><a href="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-G-WhaO4txVg/UmBUdLNHO3I/AAAAAAAAMUg/CMhvf3ezMMk/s1600-h/DSC_0299%25255B9%25255D.jpg"><img title="DSC_0299" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px" border="0" alt="DSC_0299" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-G8mHGJiwRto/UmBUdsN70_I/AAAAAAAAMUo/vmZ7v00Zmgo/DSC_0299_thumb%25255B6%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="350" height="544"></a> <a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-sXn9o9SLlfY/UmBUeB-0teI/AAAAAAAAMU0/w3wedBd-0GA/s1600-h/DSC_0312%25255B17%25255D.jpg"><img title="DSC_0312" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px" border="0" alt="DSC_0312" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-TceZBy1wAJY/UmBUeuE4AqI/AAAAAAAAMU4/oVPXeyr3Vgg/DSC_0312_thumb%25255B14%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="349" height="543"></a> </p> <p><a href="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-WpfXaIO4IEo/UmBUewBABWI/AAAAAAAAMVA/HsFNBz-tux8/s1600-h/DSC_0346%25255B8%25255D.jpg"><img title="DSC_0346" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px" border="0" alt="DSC_0346" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-kiu0NxfqJmo/UmBUfjih6aI/AAAAAAAAMVI/3YoN0PH57IY/DSC_0346_thumb%25255B5%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="716" height="519"></a></p> <p><a href="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-CRu_jLQt4fM/UmBUfyX8wXI/AAAAAAAAMVU/Tl6GJHidP7E/s1600-h/DSC_0333%25255B11%25255D.jpg"><img title="DSC_0333" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px" border="0" alt="DSC_0333" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-QJK3E0bCHws/UmBUg4K1WdI/AAAAAAAAMVY/JXrsFvzv6GQ/DSC_0333_thumb%25255B13%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="370" height="291"></a> <a href="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-zS7jtYedbVg/UmBUhM9P4HI/AAAAAAAAMVg/rzsThc-7O08/s1600-h/DSC_0337%25255B8%25255D.jpg"><img title="DSC_0337" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px" border="0" alt="DSC_0337" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-c5u9TOYLDRY/UmBUiXkoCjI/AAAAAAAAMVs/AiOjj43QhDk/DSC_0337_thumb%25255B8%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="326" height="292"></a></p> <p>I am super happy with it. So apparently he’s not excited about interior design as I am. =)</p> <p>As far as sources go, here are a few links:</p> <blockquote> <p>Paint: BEHR mixed to Benjamin Moore’s Rockport Gray HC-105, at 80% (I wish I would have gone 50%).</p> <p>Medicine cabinet: IKEA Hemnes – discontinued. They have a more modern <a href="http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/70217671/" target="_blank">version</a> now.</p> <p>Chalkboard: <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00BPWP174/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i01?ie=UTF8&psc=1" target="_blank">chalkboard vinyl</a>. Review: The IKEA chalk that I have is very scratchy on the chalkboard vinyl. Maybe I need better quality chalk. I would be mad if it were for a surface that I wanted to change often, but am happy with it for this project. I like the option to peel it off and revert back to the wood later if I wanted to; which I probably won’t – this is my favorite thing in the space!!</p> <p>Lantern: IKEA, <a href="http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/80226528/" target="_blank">Morkt Lantern</a></p> <p>Larger globe: thrifted. This is my favorite globe in the entire world. The colors are perfect. Someone painted on it “CHRIST FOR THE WORLD, MISSION FUND” which is very fitting for my little man that wants to be a missionary. <3</p> <p>Smaller globe: Target pencil sharpener.</p> <p>Trash can: Target basic. It was black, I spray painted it Rust-Oleum Marigold Yellow</p> <p>Red lantern: garage sale.</p> <p>Soap: <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Mrs-Meyers-Clean-Day-Verbena/dp/B000E75ES2/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1382042816&sr=8-2&keywords=meyer+lemon+hand+soap" target="_blank">Meyer Lemon Verbena liquid hand soap</a></p> <p>Brush and bowl: thrifted. Because homeboy does NOT know how to use a towel without dropping it and leaving it wadded up on the counter. This one actually holds onto the towel really well – no more wadded up towel!! This was the <a href="http://www.pinterest.com/pin/177681147771681078/" target="_blank">inspiration</a>. My version is a bit more rugged. They can’t be sticking out the back it won’t hang straight to the wall. </p> <p>I put the ends of the rope through the eye screws, tying knots to hold it in place and cutting the excess off. </p> <p>Then, being the magiver DIYer that I am, I screwed it directly into the wall using 2.5 inch long screws, placed behind where the towel hangs, so they’re hidden. I screwed one into a stud and used a sheetrock anchor for the other one.</p> <p>That’s it!</p></blockquote> <p><a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-AY2TVg64yA0/UmBUlO3EFwI/AAAAAAAAMWQ/4eh8BtFWiUo/s1600-h/DSC_0342%25255B5%25255D.jpg"><img title="DSC_0342" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px" border="0" alt="DSC_0342" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-0T7RDClUkjs/UmBUlbyhdBI/AAAAAAAAMWY/UIJ0pOPDesQ/DSC_0342_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="241" height="367"></a> <a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-PDk43l2ZBbQ/UmBUmJk83kI/AAAAAAAAMWg/0S4PKspRTas/s1600-h/DSC_0345%25255B6%25255D.jpg"><img title="DSC_0345" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px" border="0" alt="DSC_0345" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-fihLyzmWFDM/UmBUmgrWHnI/AAAAAAAAMWo/Yx1Z-RJYzbg/DSC_0345_thumb%25255B7%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="417" height="370"></a></p> <p><a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-WZMV4ZoCMXE/UmBUnFtocRI/AAAAAAAAMWw/AAHXPfsUVgQ/s1600-h/DSC_0343%25255B6%25255D.jpg"><img title="DSC_0343" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px" border="0" alt="DSC_0343" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-xv3pNQbnc7w/UmBUn5p1u9I/AAAAAAAAMW8/JLFZTNrGPvs/DSC_0343_thumb%25255B3%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="675" height="457"></a></p> <p> </p> <p>That’s all I got today! I have looked for tutorials. And looked for other tutorials. And found a wide variety of directions. And I have done it a few times myself. So I thought I would share this easy, affordable process and my experience with it.</p> <p><a href="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-0kMYg_W4ZQk/UlbIyjc5TbI/AAAAAAAAMRw/IMD6Jnm_hoA/s1600-h/DSC_1193_TXT%25255B6%25255D.jpg"><img title="DSC_1193_TXT" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px" border="0" alt="DSC_1193_TXT" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-jtP4kI2yh6Y/UlbIzAFogyI/AAAAAAAAMR0/DXoxAbjb-OM/DSC_1193_TXT_thumb%25255B3%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="736" height="496"></a></p> <p><strong><font style="background-color: #ffff00"></font></strong><strong><font style="">Materials</font></strong><strong><font style="background-color: #ffff00"></font>:</strong></p> <blockquote> <p>Wood to be stained</p> <p>2-4 Tea Bags (optional= for darker color)</p> <p>Vinegar (any kind)</p> <p><a href="http://www.homedepot.com/p/Homax-4-0-12-Pad-Steel-Wool-Super-Fine-Grade-10120000/100212006#.UlbEb1DqmD8" target="_blank">Steel Wool</a> (finer is better, they say)</p> <p>Gloves (or your hands will be stained for a week)</p> <p><a href="http://www.lowes.com/pd_104023-11591-90112_1z0yyep+2z8vi__?productId=3150193&Ntt=paint+brush&pl=1&currentURL=%3FNtt%3Dpaint%2Bbrush%26page%3D1&facetInfo=$1%20-%20$5" target="_blank">Cheap Brush</a></p> <p>Two Mason Jars + a Lid</p> <p>Plastic Wrap</p> <p>Coffee Filter or <font style="background-color: #ffff00"></font><font style="">Paper</font> Towels</p> <p>Fine Sand Paper (optional)</p> <p><a href="http://www.anniesloan.com/acatalog/copy_of_Lannoy_Nuit.html" target="_blank">Clear Wax</a> or Polyurethane (optional= for shine)</p></blockquote> <p><strong>Directions:</strong></p> <blockquote> <p>1. The vinegar and steel wool need some time to become friends. For a big batch, I put 3-4 “pillows” of steel wool into a large mason jar and fill it to the top of the steel wool with regular white vinegar. Basically you need enough vinegar to coat whatever you want to stain (and it takes time so you want to be sure you have enough the first time around), you want to stuff that amount of vinegar pretty well with the steel wool. The recipe does not have to be exact. I use a mason jar, put plastic wrap lightly over the top and barely screw a lid ring on lightly over that so it can breathe. It stinks so I put it outside for 24 (medium color) to 48 hours (very dark color). There is going to be a chemical reaction inside the jar which creates pressure, and on my first attempt, it actually popped the lid off my Tupperware container and splattered dark stain all over my kitchen (washes off with scrubby sponge). Once it gets going, you will see bubbles and hear fizzing much like carbonation bubbles. The vinegar does not really change color like you might expect, so don’t be waiting for it to get dark in the jar.</p> <p>2. <strong>Optional, if you want darker color:</strong> This step can be completed ahead of time or just before staining. Steep some tea bags and let the tea cool. I steeped 3 tea bags in 2 cups water. Adjust this for how much water you need to coat your project. Toss the tea bags and simply brush the tea all over the wood you are going to stain. Let dry. This will not change the color of the wood, but later will aid the chemical reaction with the vinegar and the wood, creating a darker color during that process. </p> <p>3. Pour the vinegar mixture through the coffee filter or paper towels to strain out any debris in the liquid. Brush the stain onto your wood. This is the fun part. You don’t usually see an immediate color change, but it will start to gradually change and keep changing for a few hours. Here is a shot of the change a few minutes in:</p></blockquote> <blockquote> <p><a href="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-Nyas6nf8qtA/UlbIztiN_uI/AAAAAAAAMSA/M8EEoK23kqA/s1600-h/DSC_1191_TXT%25255B6%25255D.jpg"><img title="DSC_1191_TXT" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px" border="0" alt="DSC_1191_TXT" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-ztElmk50zMg/UlbI0a-63tI/AAAAAAAAMSE/fHiM15UcprY/DSC_1191_TXT_thumb%25255B3%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="698" height="470"></a></p></blockquote> <blockquote> <p>and here is a shot showing freshly applied stain at the top of the stack and about 30 minute-old stain at the bottom:</p></blockquote> <blockquote> <p><a href="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-G3O83c6ZTEI/UlbI059QEAI/AAAAAAAAMSQ/X6ly7HOrb1U/s1600-h/DSC_0036%25255B7%25255D.jpg"><img title="DSC_0036" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px" border="0" alt="DSC_0036" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-VljaLnPY4h0/UlbI1YNjrTI/AAAAAAAAMSU/C2dRyKUbwCo/DSC_0036_thumb%25255B4%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="695" height="1057"></a></p> <p>Don’t mind my messy kitchen! If you look closely at the crate stack you can see that the top, fresh, stain is more grayish, while the middle is a little reddish and the older stain at the bottom is almost purplish. This change happens as it dries. After it is several hours dry, it returns to a regular brown. If there is any reddish or purplish color left after it dries you can very lightly sand it to remove some of that residue.</p> <p>One tip: since there isn’t an instant color change, be slow and careful to make sure you get every bit of the wood covered. Otherwise, after you are into the project or even finished, places that you missed will show up. This stain is more forgiving than regular stain because it is just vinegar and dries slower, allowing a more even finish. But if you allow it to dry all the way and then try touchups, they <em>will</em> show. Try to get it all the first time. The beauty of this process is that once the vinegar is dry, it can be handled again and is not tacky like real stain.</p> <p>4. So here is what you have now, compared to raw wood:</p> <p><a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-_JySK3x6fZ8/UlbI2ElS_pI/AAAAAAAAMSc/LcWjAww1IWM/s1600-h/DSC_0032%25255B6%25255D.jpg"><img title="DSC_0032" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px" border="0" alt="DSC_0032" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-ozGJNXckJNI/UlbI2r81uWI/AAAAAAAAMSo/7QsqK2MXqJ4/DSC_0032_thumb%25255B3%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="697" height="470"></a></p> <p>You can either be done now (for an outdoor project I would leave it at this), or add a coat of wax or polyurethane for shine and protection.</p> <p>I have not tried Polyurethane, but I know that other Pinners have.</p> <p>I had <a href="http://www.anniesloan.com/acatalog/copy_of_Lannoy_Nuit.html" target="_blank">Annie Sloan Clear Wax</a> on hand so I added a coat of that to Mark’s <font style="background-color: #ffff00"></font><font style=""><a href="http://www.willworkfordecor.blogspot.com/2013/09/diy-adaptable-art-frames.html" target="_blank">adaptable frames</a></font>. You can see the dimension it adds to the wood grain, and the nice shine that it adds…</p></blockquote> <blockquote> <p><a href="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-4Ipv-oWDvJc/UlbI3VnHzcI/AAAAAAAAMSw/m5GEwPAlOtU/s1600-h/DSC_1198_TXT%25255B8%25255D.jpg"><img title="DSC_1198_TXT" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px" border="0" alt="DSC_1198_TXT" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-hYYdbLPyo_s/UlbI3ygztiI/AAAAAAAAMS0/0d2137B4HMI/DSC_1198_TXT_thumb%25255B8%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="692" height="811"></a></p></blockquote> <blockquote> <p><a href="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-eF1F_7djSZk/UlbI4WD2Z_I/AAAAAAAAMS8/1u6fU2DRZmA/s1600-h/DSC_1197_txt%25255B7%25255D.jpg"><img title="DSC_1197_txt" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px" border="0" alt="DSC_1197_txt" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-FW-OuL6OC30/UlbI447p73I/AAAAAAAAMTE/fAmDzXZDvUg/DSC_1197_txt_thumb%25255B4%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="689" height="469"></a></p></blockquote> <blockquote> <p>You can also see how dark and true brown it dried. All my projects have been pine, ranging from common board, stain-grade plywood and cheap craft store crates, and they all are a very slightly different hue. I did the tea wash on the <font style="background-color: #ffff00"></font><font style=""><a href="http://www.willworkfordecor.blogspot.com/2013/09/diy-adaptable-art-frames.html" target="_blank">adaptable frames</a></font> (above) which is why they are darker, and skipped that step on the crates so they are lighter. On the crates I sanded them lightly, especially hitting the corners and edges, and it really gave them a worn and cozy look. I have not tried this, but here is a pin I found on <a href="http://www.pinterest.com/pin/177681147772179892/" target="_blank">achieving different colors</a> with the stain.</p> <p>One last tip: I have seen pinners use the mixture after two weeks (very dark), but you probably can’t keep this for projects too far in the future... </p> <p>Oh, also there were warnings about how serious this chemical reaction was and how you should wear gloves, eye protection and a mask and leave the mixture outside. So I’ll go ahead and pass those along so I don’t get sued. I did not wear a mask but I did work in a well ventilated area, and after the first kitchen mishap, I did let the mixture steep outside the other times. Tiny amounts of the steel wool dissolve in the vinegar (so I’ve read) and so I could imagine it would not feel good to get vinegar and steel dust in your eyes. I will wear eye protection next time.</p></blockquote> <blockquote> <p>Cost for my initial supplies was about $10 and it made me about 4 good sized batches of stain.</p> <p> </p></blockquote> <p>So there you have it. What do you think? Is this process more or less daunting than store bought stain?</p> Tasha B.http://www.blogger.com/profile/05644123124805798981noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9191331405854961627.post-2041783124350918862013-10-01T12:49:00.001-07:002013-10-01T14:35:54.431-07:00diy { another chalkboard globe }<p> </p> <p>I <3 globes. </p> <p>I haven’t gotten a new one in a long time… I must get thrifting and remedy that. I want a whole collection of them. So far I “only” have six. </p> <p>One of them has been in the kids’ rooms for as long as I’ve had it. For Mark’s room refresh, I did a little work on it. Then, as any globe-a-holic would, I stole it for myself.</p> <p>But I had my reasons.</p> <p>Have a look…</p> <p><a href="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-t472ZcqQ5Yg/UksnAJlPl-I/AAAAAAAAMOo/_95KtCu9QP8/s1600-h/globeb%252526a%25255B6%25255D.jpg"><img title="globeb&a" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px" border="0" alt="globeb&a" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-F5lZ7--QZNk/UksnAsHDS0I/AAAAAAAAMOs/nnH9VqSw7mM/globeb%252526a_thumb%25255B3%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="731" height="530"></a></p> <p>I was never totally happy with the globe for the kids’ rooms because it isn’t very colorful – I know it has some colors, but not the bright, vibrant hues I picture when I imagine a globe collection. But I always kept it in their room in hopes of just that – a <em>collection</em> of globes.</p> <p>Well the collection is slow going and my patience is lacking, so I decided to have my way with this one, as I’d had my chalkboard ways with <a href="http://willworkfordecor.blogspot.com/2012/07/globe-redo.html" target="_blank">one in the past</a>.</p> <blockquote> <p><strong>The how-to:</strong></p> <p>I gently spread the bar that attaches to either end of the globe (it’s like a spring-loaded clamp), in order to remove the globe. Then I bent and inserted the end of a metal hanger into the hole and hung the globe outside. I cleaned the globe and applied a good coat of gray spray primer, and followed it with two good coats of black chalkboard spray paint. I let that dry about 48 hours before I tried writing on it. </p> <p>In the meantime, I added two coats of Rust-Oleum antique bronze spray paint to the stand. </p> <p>I rubbed a chalky eraser all over the globe first to prime it. Then, looking at another globe and following the mountain ridges on the chalkboard globe, I drew in the continents. Some small islands may have been lost / forsaken during the makeover of this globe. </p> <p> </p></blockquote> <p>Then I got going on Mark’s room. When I hung up his <a href="http://www.willworkfordecor.blogspot.com/2013/09/diy-adaptable-art-frames.html" target="_blank">adaptable art frames</a>, and tried to layer in the refashioned globe in front of them, it was toooo much neutral/gray. And the kids were already trying to spin it which it has never done gracefully, and were leaving oily, dark fingerprints all over it’s dusty chalkboard goodness...</p> <p>That’s when I snatched it up and marched it down to my room. And it lives with me now. And now I love it. </p> <p><a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-CwOYxSuyiSw/UksnBCxZKfI/AAAAAAAAMO4/c2lIMZHiqMc/s1600-h/DSC_0211%25255B7%25255D.jpg"><img title="DSC_0211" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; I wish I was Southern.</p> <p>I photographed a project today! Can you even believe it? I have proof.</p> <p>The big boy is transitioning into his big boy room upstairs… again. It’s a long story. And we’re trying to pull out all the stops this time. It might involve plumbing shelving you’ve seen on Pinterest a million times. Yeah. And I waver between planning some crazy custom bed and pulling up craigslist for something ready to go. No idea where that one will end up. But we did get a piece of the room done recently.</p> <p>DIY art frames that look great and are super easy to switch out artwork whenever my (or his) heart desires!</p> <p><a href="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-UE3ubAY5kyo/UkdtyVyVVFI/AAAAAAAAMK4/GuR_dDRDIJA/s1600-h/DSC_0077%25255B11%25255D.jpg"><img title="DSC_0077" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px" border="0" alt="DSC_0077" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-KXqDKw5dDqk/Ukdty0NgXGI/AAAAAAAAMK8/FwD_C3WOKHg/DSC_0077_thumb%25255B14%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="732" height="406"></a></p> <p><a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-75W4CD8dbZQ/UkdtzQQcS9I/AAAAAAAAMLI/nunsTp07eMQ/s1600-h/DSC_0060%25255B15%25255D.jpg"><img title="DSC_0060" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px" border="0" alt="DSC_0060" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-yr7G8IUbXZA/Ukdtz5HJngI/AAAAAAAAMLQ/epqLMoK1Ctg/DSC_0060_thumb%25255B6%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="351" height="544"></a> <a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-b8jYskO7olg/Ukdt0nPbWuI/AAAAAAAAMLY/fPs0ICZ5_vg/s1600-h/DSC_0079%25255B9%25255D.jpg"><img title="DSC_0079" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px" border="0" alt="DSC_0079" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-MaHpzJ6TWqU/Ukdt1CUxzLI/AAAAAAAAMLc/XVRnHMbfzU4/DSC_0079_thumb%25255B6%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="357" height="545"></a></p> <p><a href="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-GL2dHQTm8rs/Ukdt1gtZLuI/AAAAAAAAMLo/mzQmcCB7jKg/s1600-h/DSC_0061%25255B10%25255D.jpg"><img title="DSC_0061" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px" border="0" alt="DSC_0061" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-F0YyjhHEfHw/Ukdt2K-CkDI/AAAAAAAAMLs/iOlUZiaYNHU/DSC_0061_thumb%25255B4%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="727" height="490"></a></p> <p><a href="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-3vH_94VSyzc/Ukdt2nLxbHI/AAAAAAAAML4/Te_40uOIvA0/s1600-h/DSC_0056%25255B14%25255D.jpg"><img title="DSC_0056" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px" border="0" alt="DSC_0056" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-9a9s9T7zdU8/Ukdt3F23v0I/AAAAAAAAML8/kVWvXm1tnBE/DSC_0056_thumb%25255B11%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="726" height="521"></a></p> <p>So here’s the lowdown…</p> <p>This is the pin that inspired the <a href="http://www.pinterest.com/pin/177681147771856231/" target="_blank">DIY frames</a> and the pin that <a href="http://www.pinterest.com/pin/177681147770938741/" target="_blank">inspired the pictures</a> that I took of Mark’s favorite toys. </p> <p> </p> <p><strong><font size="3">DIY adaptable artwork frames</font></strong></p> <p>Supplies:</p> <blockquote> <p>Board(s) your desired size (mine was a 1x18x48” cut into 3 14x18” pieces)</p> <p>6 <font style="background-color: #ffff00"></font><font style=""><a href="http://shop.hobbylobby.com/products/antique-silver-hinge-clips-436691/" target="_blank">clips</a></font><font style="background-color: #ffff00"></font></p> <p>6 screws or nails to fit the hole in the clips</p> <p>6 <font style="background-color: #ffff00"></font><font style=""><a href="http://shop.hobbylobby.com/products/small-sawtooth-picture-hangers-with-nails-930867/" target="_blank">nail-less hanging brackets</a></font></p> <p>Stain (or vinegar process)</p> <p><font style="background-color: #ffff00"></font><font style="">Wax</font> or Polyurethane if desired</p></blockquote> <p>Instructions:</p> <blockquote> <p>1. I sanded the corners for a softer look and then used a tea and vinegar process which you’ve seen all over Pinterest I’m sure. Good directions and photos are tricky to find… I plan to remedy that for you very soon. You’re welcome. I added a coat of <a href="http://www.anniesloan.com/acatalog/copy_of_Lannoy_Nuit.html" target="_blank">Annie Sloan’s clear wax</a>. Mark the locations for your brackets on the back of the frame. I think I did an inch from the top and three inches in from each side. Hammer those little babies in. I like this bracket because you don’t have to juggle hammer, brackets and nails while trying to keep them lined up. The bracket itself just pounds into the board.</p> <p><a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-YerAiov7JJo/Ukdt4mgTAjI/AAAAAAAAMMY/j1F5U2jeNX0/s1600-h/DSC_0084%25255B6%25255D.jpg"><img title="DSC_0084" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px" border="0" alt="DSC_0084" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-ZONIunUHR-I/Ukdt5RnGtfI/AAAAAAAAMMc/VxQUv0IDPWA/DSC_0084_thumb%25255B3%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="685" height="462"></a></p> <p>4. It has coincidentally been forever since I’ve blogged. Almost three weeks. Oh my word, where has the time gone? Well it’s boring enough around here that I am finally pulling these photos out of the archives and making a post. But, I will have you know, I have not been blogging because I have been doing some serious projects, so it will be my goal to photograph those and share them with you in the next couple of weeks. Big stuff. I’m so excited. Now, back to the archives.</p> <p>So I am not a Martha Stewart, prim and proper style seamstress. </p> <p>This pillow cover is made using a method I learned from MacGyver seamstress, Ashley Ann, which I pinned <a href="http://www.pinterest.com/pin/177681147768285280/" target="_blank">here</a>. Her photos taught me, hands <em>down</em>, the quickest method for a pillow cover. I am married to this pillow cover making method and I will never leave it for the rest of my life, being loyal to it and to no other for as long as we both shall live. Seriously.</p> <p>Here is my description of the process.</p> <p><strong>Materials:</strong></p> <blockquote> <p>cutting mat</p> <p>cutting guide</p> <p>rotary cutter</p> <p>standard pillow case for pillow back</p> <p>fabric for pillow front</p> <p>pillow form (20x20 is the same height as a standard queen pillow case which makes it simple)</p> <p>iron</p> <p>sewing machine and thread</p></blockquote> <p><strong>Instructions:</strong></p> <p>Press your pillow case flat, and press the fabric for the pillow front.</p> <p>Using the rotary cutter and your guide, cut your fabric for the front of the pillow. Find the measurements by measuring width and height from seam to seam on the pillow form. I don’t even bother adding seam allowances. I use feather pillow forms from IKEA which settle over time, and they’re so easy to stuff in, the dimensions don’t have to be rocket science. If that stresses you out the door, go ahead and add them in. =)</p> <p>Now trim off the <strong>seams</strong> and <strong>folded</strong> edge on the top, bottom and closed end of the pillow case (<strong>NOT</strong> the HEMMED open end). For a 20x20 pillow form, the case is already the right height. You want to just barely trim off the seams and folded edge so that we can reposition the hemmed edges to be an envelope closure for the back of the pillow cover.</p> <p><a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-eUUF4X7wGig/UkKIm2X3KoI/AAAAAAAAMIQ/wegyLMVUk7k/s1600-h/DSC_0605%25255B6%25255D.jpg"><img title="DSC_0605" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px" border="0" alt="DSC_0605" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-GH4GfT6fdLk/UkKIoq6WLBI/AAAAAAAAMIY/CqOlD3mk9Dw/DSC_0605_thumb%25255B3%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="740" height="496"></a></p> <p>You should now have separate front and back pieces from your pillow case, each with three raw edges and the original hemmed cuff edgea still intact.</p> <p> </p> <p>Now we are going to use those hemmed ends of the pillow case…</p> <p><a href="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-7Zvy4myr87Q/UkKIpq7fFMI/AAAAAAAAMIg/ombnBV9uTGI/s1600-h/DSC_0600%25255B6%25255D.jpg"><img title="DSC_0600" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px" border="0" alt="DSC_0600" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-9S2rtKEu2io/UkKIrcwbTiI/AAAAAAAAMIo/hz56heZgiBg/DSC_0600_thumb%25255B3%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="740" height="496"></a></p> <p> </p> <p>First some simple calculations… So take your pillow form width… mine is 20 inches. Add a couple inches for overlap… I added 2* so that = 22 inches. Then divide in half = 11 inches. *=My cover gapes a little – I recommend adding more like 4 inches for overlap.</p> <p>Stack your case pieces with hemmed edges together and measure in from the hemmed edge, 11 inches in my case… and cut the two layers of the pillow case.</p> <p><a href="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-BIKHOafJkwg/UkKIsiYTVNI/AAAAAAAAMIw/FUMq3Nzr1qs/s1600-h/DSC_0601%25255B8%25255D.jpg"><img title="DSC_0601" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px" border="0" alt="DSC_0601" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-NcA2CYMEXF0/UkKIuEutl1I/AAAAAAAAMI4/E1LX3ffUwW8/DSC_0601_thumb%25255B5%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="742" height="497"></a></p> <p>So in the above picture, I measured from the left hemmed edge, cutting the pillow case on the right edge of the guide at 11 inches. There are two layers here, so each layer will make half the back of the pillow cover and they will slightly overlap.</p> <p>Next, you simply lay your pillow front right-side up, then your pillow backs on top of that, right-side down (so it’s like the pillow cover is inside out), and pin around the edges. Your pillow case hems will overlap in the center. </p> <p>In this picture mine are already sewn but you can see the layout…</p> <p><a href="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-KqY8OHrS2-k/UkKIvEQkzkI/AAAAAAAAMJA/EGZA8EfLMDY/s1600-h/DSC_0609%25255B6%25255D.jpg"><img title="DSC_0609" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px" border="0" alt="DSC_0609" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-KKLSE8phSL4/UkKIwlZkZ5I/AAAAAAAAMJI/lj4Jt2vh7tk/DSC_0609_thumb%25255B3%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="744" height="498"></a></p> <p>Once it’s sewn together, turn it right-side out through the gap in the back. Then slip your pillow form into half the pillow cover through the opening in the back like so…</p> <p><a href="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-2PvEN59_JK8/UkKIxzt8S-I/AAAAAAAAMJQ/k1Y26kh1N6s/s1600-h/DSC_0610%25255B6%25255D.jpg"><img title="DSC_0610" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px" border="0" alt="DSC_0610" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-6YTvPeNuDGs/UkKIzr8BJbI/AAAAAAAAMJY/VUA02sd1VF0/DSC_0610_thumb%25255B3%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="746" height="500"></a></p> <p>Then pull the other side of the pillow cover back around the rest of the pillow like so…</p> <p><a href="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-OQ3zb3ElC6w/UkKI0-0JDII/AAAAAAAAMJg/2nkYXTlXpOQ/s1600-h/DSC_0611%25255B6%25255D.jpg"><img title="DSC_0611" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px" border="0" alt="DSC_0611" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-99S-6jLyFVw/UkKI2Oa9_HI/AAAAAAAAMJo/1Z2r2bOeGzg/DSC_0611_thumb%25255B3%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="742" height="497"></a></p> <p><a href="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-yjn29I6nyaA/UkKI3b6GjHI/AAAAAAAAMJw/iIvzqd8tWm4/s1600-h/DSC_0612%25255B6%25255D.jpg"><img title="DSC_0612" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px" border="0" alt="DSC_0612" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-3vhGsaOu54k/UkKI41tGd_I/AAAAAAAAMJ4/3ZwJd8dYNsc/DSC_0612_thumb%25255B3%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="740" height="496"></a></p> <p>And that’s it.</p> <p><a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-UKZc8E16avk/UkKI6IXSNXI/AAAAAAAAMKA/MyGo7xsThW0/s1600-h/DSC_0622%25255B6%25255D.jpg"><img title="DSC_0622" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px" border="0" alt="DSC_0622" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-cCHuY33jC_M/UkKI7XAlEcI/AAAAAAAAMKI/5fgjau0V2uA/DSC_0622_thumb%25255B3%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="740" height="496"></a></p> <p>Here is the pillow on our bed, where it no longer lives. It’s okay to say that as long as it was within a week ago, right? Because it feels like I’m catching up still. I *just* got the laundry caught up. Still need to mop. Well, let’s just stop there because you don’t want my to-do list rearing it’s ugly head up in here. It’s UG-LY. I crossed off a whole two things today. Baby steps.</p> <p>Anyway, since we -ahem- just got back, I thought I’d share a few pics from vacation. I’ve blogged about my parents’ house many times before. Sorry. We go there a lot. We had some of the same old adventures and some new adventures this time. </p> <p>We hit the natural <a href="http://willworkfordecor.blogspot.com/2011/08/much-needed-vacation-recipe.html" target="_blank">sandstone waterslides</a> again…</p> <p><a href="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-aODRRptXA90/Uiq4tvbZgDI/AAAAAAAAMAE/ziW1HP-AL9s/s1600-h/DSC_0998%25255B6%25255D.jpg"><img title="DSC_0998" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px" border="0" alt="DSC_0998" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-x_XWKvpEtLI/Uiq4uNwu0eI/AAAAAAAAMAM/fvBnzyIWWO4/DSC_0998_thumb%25255B3%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="735" height="497"></a></p> <p><a href="http://lh3.ggpht.com/--Sdp_wMZrjI/Uiq4ulNKi9I/AAAAAAAAMAU/BeAkteFsr8U/s1600-h/DSC_0994%25255B6%25255D.jpg"><img title="DSC_0994" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px" border="0" alt="DSC_0994" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-QU4l8idsKeo/Uiq4vDOUw5I/AAAAAAAAMAc/BxJGd7jNlio/DSC_0994_thumb%25255B3%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="732" height="495"></a></p> <p>Don’t look at my horrible chipping nail polish. The wheelin’ trip through the woods to the hike involved Ty, Susie and I in our little Samurai jeep, our friend and his girlfriend riding double on a dirt bike, and my son following them on his dirt bike. We made it to the top just in time…</p> <p><a href="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-GFOk__c5vGs/Uiq46mDO23I/AAAAAAAAMDE/k8DRelNg9-o/s1600-h/DSC_1061%25255B6%25255D.jpg"><img title="DSC_1061" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px" border="0" alt="DSC_1061" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-dsEx9vDyLmc/Uiq47BXU7qI/AAAAAAAAMDI/RZFbKLn1aOw/DSC_1061_thumb%25255B3%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="726" height="489"></a></p> <p><a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-DrJX6QaoxIg/Uiq47lnMKCI/AAAAAAAAMDU/UUZh7pymd7w/s1600-h/DSC_1062%25255B8%25255D.jpg"><img title="DSC_1062" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px" border="0" alt="DSC_1062" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-LRfa9yPxrQI/Uiq48Pm5_fI/AAAAAAAAMDc/CttFLsD_p60/DSC_1062_thumb%25255B9%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="726" height="247"></a></p> <p>It was pretty, but a little spooky hiking down in the dark with the little wolf bites among us. Then we got down to the parking area, where Mark’s dirt bike had broken down – and realized it wouldn’t be fixed there, and that for our friends to ride double in the dark with no headlight would be a disaster. So we ended up with Ty, me, Susie, Mark, one friend AND a dirt bike – in the Samurai! Do you know what a Samurai is? I’ll post a picture later- it was a bit crowded! And our friend tailgating us all the way out of the woods so he could see by our taillights. It wasn’t the most comfortable trip.</p> <p>The next day we did a local hike like normal people – in the daylight…</p> <p><a href="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-xpi0J5ExSMc/Uiq48vOphNI/AAAAAAAAMDk/mbkg_sXlQoY/s1600-h/DSC_1064%25255B8%25255D.jpg"><img title="DSC_1064" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px" border="0" alt="DSC_1064" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-tXl8GNofCPQ/Uiq49ay1eoI/AAAAAAAAMDs/M4oxFzk2qEs/DSC_1064_thumb%25255B8%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="350" height="478"></a> <a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-8t8OrDmPZSo/Uiq49_J_SXI/AAAAAAAAMD0/ufc3ZA1KW1Q/s1600-h/DSC_1069%25255B6%25255D.jpg"><img title="DSC_1069" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px" border="0" alt="DSC_1069" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-g37z9JxhpKc/Uiq4-RPLm1I/AAAAAAAAMD8/U0wSFCrkJMo/DSC_1069_thumb%25255B7%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="346" height="476"></a></p> <p>See the lookout at the top of the hill in the picture above left? It was a short, steep hike right to that lookout.</p> <p><a href="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-WXk-i4Ssp98/Uiq4-yeGzbI/AAAAAAAAMEE/Aym5X_th4oU/s1600-h/DSC_1076%25255B7%25255D.jpg"><img title="DSC_1076" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px" border="0" alt="DSC_1076" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-m5I_mzBFK-A/Uiq4_tubanI/AAAAAAAAMEM/kAWjXYkvBXI/DSC_1076_thumb%25255B4%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="717" height="488"></a></p> <p>Fully functioning out house just in case you should have need of it. Actually I believe it is for the volunteers who stay in the lookout and “look out” for fires during the dry season.</p> <p><a href="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-uebdJiAjqGg/Uiq5AOBPV3I/AAAAAAAAMEU/AFb3Zrq7geA/s1600-h/DSC_1078%25255B5%25255D.jpg"><img title="DSC_1078" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; float: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; margin-left: auto; border-left: 0px; display: block; padding-right: 0px; margin-right: auto" border="0" alt="DSC_1078" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-aGvA5o_R9Y8/Uiq5AlyUtjI/AAAAAAAAMEc/C9yEuwRHBvo/DSC_1078_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="514" height="768"></a></p> <p align="left">That was the closest we got to the lookout because it was covered –COVERED- in flying ants. Swarms. Like you have never seen before. Ty tried to go near it and didn’t last long and I didn’t even try. I could barely stand at the top because they were pestering us so bad. </p> <p align="left">But it was worth a few minutes for the view.</p> <p align="left"><a href="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-wTPyME1QtMo/Uiq5BGzkr6I/AAAAAAAAMEk/8pj2XRiJ5AM/s1600-h/DSC_1083%25255B6%25255D.jpg"><img title="DSC_1083" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px" border="0" alt="DSC_1083" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-gvbSkUfXai0/Uiq5BsktXrI/AAAAAAAAMEs/NVLZA9Z9VEI/DSC_1083_thumb%25255B3%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="745" height="502"></a></p> <p align="left"><a href="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-SWCKHhGGBE0/Uiq5CSI7qLI/AAAAAAAAME0/3-HQPBmCf_4/s1600-h/DSC_1085%25255B6%25255D.jpg"><img title="DSC_1085" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px" border="0" alt="DSC_1085" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-HGrwmoiEUOI/Uiq5C5n_4NI/AAAAAAAAME8/7_Y7Vr-JMrM/DSC_1085_thumb%25255B3%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="744" height="501"></a></p> <p align="left">Mark and Ty stayed at the highest rock for a while looking at the view and finding things on the map.</p> <p align="left">Then we followed the lead of a guy we saw on the logging roads, who told us where we could find fossils in abundance. We did not have such luck as he proclaimed. We would like to try again sometime when we have more time and see what we can find. Yeah.</p> <p>So left to right, here are the tutorials I pieced together to create these beauties…</p> <blockquote> <p>1. Giant rose: this was the <a href="http://pinterest.com/pin/177681147770020617/" target="_blank">inspiration</a> ($10 for tutorial), this was closest <a href="http://pinterest.com/pin/177681147771920326/" target="_blank">free tutorial</a> I could find</p> <p>2. Tiny bow (my own creation), made of lace trim, hot glued onto the headband</p> <p>3. & 4. <a href="http://pinterest.com/pin/177681147768465968/" target="_blank">Felt flower headband tutorial</a><strong> (how to make the headband portion and also gives age/sizes for headbands)</strong></p> <p>5. <a href="http://eighteen25.blogspot.com/2010/05/simple-circle-felt-flowers.html" target="_blank">Felt flower tutorial</a> (they made theirs into clips / I put mine on headbands)</p> <p>6. <a href="http://pinterest.com/pin/177681147771920298/" target="_blank">Pinwheel tutorial</a> (it’s for paper but I used the process with felt)</p></blockquote> <p>So there you have it. If any tiny girl people in your life need some pretty hair things… well, now you have no excuse. =) And if you want to check out my photoshoot <a href="http://www.willworkfordecor.blogspot.com/2013/04/baby-love-photoshoot.html" target="_blank">here</a>, you will see some of the headbands on my baby homegirl. </p> <p> </p> <p>Have a blessed day!</p> Tasha B.http://www.blogger.com/profile/05644123124805798981noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9191331405854961627.post-72644035879316378192013-08-22T16:55:00.001-07:002013-08-22T16:55:40.855-07:00diy { spend/save/give jars }<p> </p> <p>My hubby and I went through Dave Ramsey’s Financial Freedom courses several years ago, and have handled our finances based on this education ever since. The principles are simple, biblical and attainable (with some hard work). If you’re interested, I recommend reading his book, <em>Total Money Makeover</em>. It’s an easy read and well organized.</p> <p>Dave talks about starting children young on a -<strong> give / spend / save</strong> - division of funds. </p> <p>We have worked to teach our son (age 6) the value of working hard and tried not to allow the spirit of entitlement to creep in. Our daughter (age 3) is still a little young. But we’re working on saving for her first big thing right now (which she has yet to pick out).</p> <p>This might seem a little backwards, but for us phase one was <strong>Spend. </strong></p> <p>I first tried to get my little man to work and save, but quickly was frustrated with his lack of motivation. I found to teach him about money, the <em>experience</em> of (short term) saving for that little $6 toy that they can do two or three special chores for (we paid especially well in the early stages), and walk in the store and hand over their hard earned cash and walk out with a toy, is a big “aha moment” for the little ones. Our son didn’t “get” money until we let him <em>spend</em> some.</p> <p>That first spending trip was for a little item, but we quickly worked in the next phase: <strong>Saving</strong>.</p> <p>We would take our son to the store and let him pick out something more expensive, that he didn’t have enough money to buy. We would remind him of this when he was working for money, encourage him to keep working for it and counting his money each time until he had enough to go buy it. He usually has something he is saving for at any given time; recently he bought a scooter, and has purchased many Lego sets with his own money. He quickly became very interested in saving.</p> <p>Well now it is time for phase three. <strong>Giving</strong>.</p> <p>It’s starting to bug me to hand them change out of my purse as they head for childrens’ church. To hand them cash out of my grocery budget for the charity fundraiser at VBS. I want them to have a heart for giving.</p> <p>So it was time to implement the Dave Ramsey recommended piggy banks to make a place for designating “give” funds. </p> <p>Which, of course, I had to DIY.</p> <p> </p> <p><a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-qP_9beFlCsg/Uhak1Hz6InI/AAAAAAAAL5k/wOWxnAV9VeQ/s1600-h/DSC_08507.jpg"><img title="DSC_0850" style="border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px; border-top-width: 0px" border="0" alt="DSC_0850" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-kwem-Y9i0pI/Uhak1mcUF6I/AAAAAAAAL5s/a-wTewAzpII/DSC_0850_thumb4.jpg?imgmax=800" width="739" height="500"></a></p> <p><a href="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-B98nhB8m1SE/Uhak2ANst4I/AAAAAAAAL50/L0jFIj9tSPU/s1600-h/DSC_08606.jpg"><img title="DSC_0860" style="border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px; border-top-width: 0px" border="0" alt="DSC_0860" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-a2IhfAeCR_E/Uhak2pzw3iI/AAAAAAAAL58/DhSwXWw4bwA/DSC_0860_thumb3.jpg?imgmax=800" width="732" height="495"></a></p> <p><a href="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-aVk08WjjYa8/Uhak3LUZvbI/AAAAAAAAL6E/emvoRWo0wFM/s1600-h/DSC_08716.jpg"><img title="DSC_0871" style="border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px; border-top-width: 0px" border="0" alt="DSC_0871" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-O7l1tBqyTxU/Uhak3mQHSPI/AAAAAAAAL6M/TMMIRuzqq4Q/DSC_0871_thumb7.jpg?imgmax=800" width="374" height="512"></a> <a href="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-INcpDQhj-5M/Uhak4PRce4I/AAAAAAAAL6U/x0_-1dMOjmQ/s1600-h/DSC_08559.jpg"><img title="DSC_0855" style="border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px; border-top-width: 0px" border="0" alt="DSC_0855" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-3x384a91-7s/Uhak4ge5dTI/AAAAAAAAL6c/7Wcp5nlLPOo/DSC_0855_thumb6.jpg?imgmax=800" width="334" height="513"></a></p> <p><a href="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-tcs4goRdhfY/Uhak5PaV1ZI/AAAAAAAAL6k/C0P3cpHTAd0/s1600-h/budget%252520jars%25255B6%25255D.jpg"><img title="budget jars" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px" border="0" alt="budget jars" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-sMugCCUEGns/Uhak5n1qkGI/AAAAAAAAL6s/Si54Ii2Sr2Y/budget%252520jars_thumb%25255B3%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="732" height="495"></a></p> <p><font color="#ff0000" size="3"><strong>Girly Give / Save / Spend Money Jars:</strong></font></p> <p><strong>Supplies:</strong></p> <blockquote> <p>3 Bonne Maman jelly jars and lids</p> <p>floral scrapbook paper</p> <p>pencil </p> <p>scissors</p> <p>Mod Podge </p> <p>paint brush</p> <p>3 tags</p> <p>Sharpie (fine tip)</p> <p>baker’s twine</p> <p>washi tape</p></blockquote> <p><strong>Instructions:</strong></p> <blockquote> <p>1. I am excited to emphasize adding money to the “give” jars as they earn money now. </p> <p>And I should add that we do not pay our kids for doing chores. In the beginning we did a few times, just to get the ball rolling, but now they are expected to be responsible for themselves and their belongings without monetary reward. They get paid for doing harder, longer jobs that are above and beyond their normal responsibilities. Those jobs also pay well. =) We by no means have it all figured out, but I thought I’d share what has worked for us thus far. </p> <p> </p> <p>Have a great day!</p> Tasha B.http://www.blogger.com/profile/05644123124805798981noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9191331405854961627.post-64021546439956802102013-08-21T16:35:00.001-07:002013-08-21T16:35:43.837-07:00ikea style<p>The number one thing I hear about IKEA is, “Isn’t there stuff cheaply made?”</p> <p>The answer is yes… and no.</p> <p>Truth is, most places you go you have to be aware of quality. Great example: I once purchased a Pottery Barn corner desk for a client- it was great and big and bulky… and was fake wood and chips all the time and dents and scratches very easily. It was about $1000. = No matter where you shop, you have to be aware.</p> <p>Yes, IKEA’s design, process and shipping methods allow for them to make some super <em><strong>affordable</strong></em> products. And, yes, that for sure means some of those uber cheap products will not stand the test of time. But they have a really great team of designers, making some nice on-trend items, and with a little discretion (mainly I look for solid wood pieces, and inspect other quality before I purchase), there are plenty of items to choose from that will hold up well over time. And that’s coming from a mom of two little rough and tough country bumpkins.</p> <p>So just for fun I thought I’d show you a few of IKEA’s items that I’m crushing on lately…</p> <p>Okay, “few” may have been an understatement. </p> <p>Let’s just say they’re organized by color. =) or… You could say I went completely overboard.</p> <p> </p> <p>The WHITES…</p> <p><a href="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-H74fg8taLso/UhVOvAQdxgI/AAAAAAAAL4M/39o94C3k8oc/s1600-h/ikea_white%25255B10%25255D.jpg"><img title="ikea_white" style="border-top: 0px; Take it or leave it. </p> <p>Either way, have a blessed day!</p> Tasha B.http://www.blogger.com/profile/05644123124805798981noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9191331405854961627.post-31298278043555445082013-08-20T12:15:00.001-07:002013-08-20T12:15:32.159-07:00thrift junky chronicles { 23 }<p> </p> <p>I’ve been A) distracted and B) trying especially hard to stay within my budget lately, which = not much thrifting or yard sale-ing. That sounds backwards, but for us, thrifting and yard sale shopping is usually for decorating and fun projects – not so much saving money on normal every day stuff. So I’ve been trying to finish projects have supplies for already and trying not to buy any. more. vintage. goodies.</p> <p>Insert sad, pouting face here.</p> <p>It’s been killing me. Every. Time. I drive past a garage sale. A little piece of me dies. Overdramatic? Yes.</p> <p>But seriously, I’ve been suffering withdrawals.</p> <p>Until this weekend.</p> <p><a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-4FY1dqpGk1M/UhPAQ4FakPI/AAAAAAAAL3A/Ra3B522GGJ4/s1600-h/DSC_0761%25255B5%25255D.jpg"><img title="DSC_0761" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; float: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; margin-left: auto; border-left: 0px; display: block; padding-right: 0px; margin-right: auto" border="0" alt="DSC_0761" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-6O89JaZI2tE/UhPARfWaduI/AAAAAAAAL3I/kmQxewfPwt0/DSC_0761_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="321" height="480"></a></p> <p><a href="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-Idytkwb5JaU/UhPASKdqCPI/AAAAAAAAL3Q/gl06O3kGCec/s1600-h/DSC_0766%25255B5%25255D.jpg"><img title="DSC_0766" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px" border="0" alt="DSC_0766" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-BcMWStXDl3A/UhPASmFCCBI/AAAAAAAAL3Y/wz6bOs8oUi8/DSC_0766_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="640" height="428"></a></p> <p><a href="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-nTHlnSg4Lcc/UhPATJQEIGI/AAAAAAAAL3g/iGE_3LA6MeY/s1600-h/DSC_0768%25255B5%25255D.jpg"><img title="DSC_0768" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px" border="0" alt="DSC_0768" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-jz-RN47mFfc/UhPATpibgPI/AAAAAAAAL3o/TMffW1peCZE/DSC_0768_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="640" height="428"></a></p> <p><a href="http://lh6.ggpht.com/--ZlQ1X94-mQ/UhPAUK_WbzI/AAAAAAAAL3w/BIrnnryvZ3E/s1600-h/DSC_0762%25255B5%25255D.jpg"><img title="DSC_0762" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px" border="0" alt="DSC_0762" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-YQ0ZV1YH8l8/UhPAUg3GcgI/AAAAAAAAL30/HnA3UDhufM4/DSC_0762_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="640" height="428"></a></p> <p>I didn’t even have my own garage sale profits in my pocket for 24 hours before I found this loot on the roadside. $20 total. And I didn’t get a great close up of the 3 doilies and the hanky. Everything at this sale was amazingly vintage. It’s a locally famous charity sale at an old farm house. A+ every time. They don’t even advertise; they just put a sign at the driveway and people pour in.</p> <p>I also purchased a vintage sink, but was vetoed by the hubby. I guess it was a little *too* vintage. Purchased for $10; sold on CL for $20. Back to plan A. It’s okay, plan A was a good one. Someday when we actually <em>execute</em> the plan, I’ll share the bathroom.</p> <p>BUT I have been executing some plans around here. Moving a boy upstairs, and trying to now make a boyish boy room and a girly girl room. Fun stuff. Not to mention a bathroom finish-up AND a bathroom freshen up that need to get done. Tying up loose ends. It’s boring here on the blog but it’s needed on the home front. </p> <p>I’ll try to be back soon with something share-worthy. In the mean time, have a lovely day/week/ “until next time!” </p> Tasha B.http://www.blogger.com/profile/05644123124805798981noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9191331405854961627.post-58354701969004142442013-08-10T12:11:00.001-07:002013-08-10T12:11:29.883-07:00Farmhouse Friday on Saturday <p dir=ltr>I had this all ready to go yesterday but had no Internet! Can we let it slide on a Saturday "just this once?? "</p>
<p dir=ltr>We were road tripping this past week on a little family vacation. Lame campgrounds were visited. A highly popular vaca destination lake was discovered to be so frigid you could hardly go in it, let alone play in it. An expensive dinner was purchased at a restaurant with the word "inn" in the name. I think Ty now agrees that's generally a bad idea. But we spent three whole days together which was needed after hubby worked 16 days straight. It was good. And we did have one hit - a family friendly water slide park was enjoyed for most of a day. We're now happy campers. </p>
<p dir=ltr>And I did find a farmhouse and make Ty flip a u turn on the freeway to get a shot of it. It was a small freeway. And the house was in an orchard, and had an old Ford in the driveway, people.  When we passed it again later there was a lady wearing a summer dress watering the garden. So sweet. Enjoy! </p>

I am the worst blogger sometimes. I have a new job opportunity that I am working on quite a bit lately. Been spending some late nights with Photoshop, some of my images, and PowerPoint. Getting ready to do some teaching. =) Super excited. I will share details later, when I have them.</p> <p>Here are some images I captured for examples for teaching and for promoting the class…</p> <p>I apologize in advance for photo overload. Slow but good. </p> <p>Switching things up around the house. Visiting grandma’s lake on these hot days. Harvesting from the garden. Having a couple days off. Breathing.</p> <p>Today we have a fourth of July party to attend tonight and I actually made my dessert this morning with <em>exactly</em> the 8 hours of required chill time… that might be like the first time I’ve ever accomplished that.</p> <p>Now, we relax. </p> <p>The neighbor boys came over to set off smoke bombs with Mark and I caught this little chain of events with the telephoto…</p> <p><a href="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-s28a_Kj1TM8/UdXR9_e_H1I/AAAAAAAALr4/yqsavW4LnHM/s1600-h/DSC_0111%25255B5%25255D.jpg"><img title="DSC_0111" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px" border="0" alt="DSC_0111" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-A4k4-mX9tFI/UdXR-bSdnmI/AAAAAAAALsA/PWEW_0tA_c8/DSC_0111_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="640" height="428"></a></p> <p><a href="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-FUkb_U34Dzs/UdXR_PDq2YI/AAAAAAAALsI/7vpuJlefzXI/s1600-h/DSC_0113%25255B5%25255D.jpg"><img title="DSC_0113" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px" border="0" alt="DSC_0113" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-5eMPY8dOfLY/UdXR_ty3_DI/AAAAAAAALsQ/1LN-c43Cuqo/DSC_0113_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="640" height="428"></a></p> <p><a href="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-Bwk3EYMoTUY/UdXSAMqR_GI/AAAAAAAALss/SoHlW6Kmgnk/s1600-h/DSC_0114%25255B5%25255D.jpg"><img title="DSC_0114" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px" border="0" alt="DSC_0114" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-4mtEYbacCT8/UdXSAqGUMnI/AAAAAAAALs0/7GZmdqqMsUI/DSC_0114_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="640" height="428"></a></p> <p>Are smoke bombs and stink bombs the same thing? I took a mental note to do that to a table someday. A lot of good it did me.</p> <p>About five years ago I saw a table for sale for a pretty penny in a magazine with a checkerboard painted on it. I cut it out and saved it in my well organized binder of decorating ideas (did anyone else do that before Pinterest?). A lot of good that did me, too.</p> <p>And a few days ago, after watching yet another checker match with my <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Multiflex-Designs-4098627-Jumbo-Checker/dp/B0002OKFA4/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1372185073&sr=8-1&keywords=giant+checkers" target="_blank">giant checker rug</a> spread out on my coffee table, I finally got around to making it happen…</p> <p> <img title="DSC_0003" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px" border="0" alt="DSC_0003" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-gqxq8SUdhCw/Ucn3ZgyduAI/AAAAAAAALqY/qPk-fONiMb4/DSC_0003_thumb%25255B3%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="640" height="428"></p> <p>I had been on the hunt for the perfect table to paint it on all these years, when I had the perfect table right under my nose! And had I found a good table to add the checkerboard to, I wouldn’t have had room for it in my little house anyway! So although adding a checkerboard to a perfectly good, <a href="http://www.worldmarket.com/product/aiden-coffee-table.do?" target="_blank">not-so-cheap table</a>, might seem crazy to many of you, it works for me! I’m unconventional like that.</p> <p><a href="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-ib94FDPA2EU/Ucn3aJHRJAI/AAAAAAAALqg/8ZuecdTKtk4/s1600-h/DSC_0004%25255B7%25255D.jpg"><img title="DSC_0004" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px" border="0" alt="DSC_0004" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-PxKifmqAhp4/Ucn3aZz5J5I/AAAAAAAALqo/zG3MOE_PxwQ/DSC_0004_thumb%25255B4%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="251" height="387"></a> <a href="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-0ZXwLjG8aFs/Ucn3avPk4AI/AAAAAAAALqw/jw2vM6Rh-Dk/s1600-h/DSC_0013%25255B8%25255D.jpg"><img title="DSC_0013" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px" border="0" alt="DSC_0013" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-zKzS2NZUKlM/Ucn3cYGmQtI/AAAAAAAALq4/suRWTwBnLrg/DSC_0013_thumb%25255B10%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="372" height="386"></a></p> <p><a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-Z1sgb2vrGGw/Ucn3cyKI-II/AAAAAAAALrA/o-AQuMjA9F0/s1600-h/DSC_0008%25255B6%25255D.jpg"><img title="DSC_0008" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px" border="0" alt="DSC_0008" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-qquY7uCcaJ0/Ucn3dPQT89I/AAAAAAAALrI/IwacAb5g2oE/DSC_0008_thumb%25255B3%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="640" height="428"></a></p> <p>I didn’t take pictures of the process, but it was really easy… here’s a quick how-to:</p> <p><strong>Materials:</strong></p> <blockquote> <p>wood table</p> <p>painter’s tape</p> <p><a href="http://www.amazon.com/Provo-Craft-243073-16-Inch-Terrifically/dp/B001EZ782S/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1372183889&sr=8-3&keywords=terrifically+tacky+tape" target="_blank">Terrifically Tacky Tape</a> (I used 1/16” width)</p> <p><a href="http://www.anniesloan.com/acatalog/United_Kingdom.html" target="_blank">Annie Sloan Chalk Paint</a></p> <p>paint brush</p> <p>sandpaper</p> <p><a href="http://www.anniesloan.com/acatalog/copy_of_Lannoy_Nuit.html" target="_blank">Annie Sloan clear wax</a></p> <p>lint-free cloths for waxing and buffing (available at big-box home improvement stores)</p></blockquote> <p><strong>Instructions:</strong></p> <blockquote> <p>1. Clean table and let dry.</p> <p>2. Measure out your checkerboard to fit your checkers. I applied painter’s tape around the outer edges. Then I used the super narrow tacky tape to tape off the inner lines of the grid.</p> <p>3. Using a small brush, I brushed on one coat of the chalk paint, carefully staying in my grid. After every-other square was painted I removed the tapes and allowed this to dry.</p> <p>4. I used sand paper to distress the squares, softening them and making them look worn. TIP: Be patient. I sometimes make the mistake of not letting it dry enough and getting distressing that looks like scratches instead of natural wear. Let it dry completely (hours, at least) before sanding.</p> <p>5. Apply an even coat of the clear wax with a lint-free cotton cloth, in a section about one foot square. Then buff it with a new cloth. Keep doing this one section at a time until the table top is covered and then give the whole surface a final buffing with another clean cloth to really give it a shine.</p></blockquote> <p>It was a pretty quick and simple process. The ASCP is really quite forgiving. There is a <a href="http://missmustardseed.com/2011/04/waxes-winners/" target="_blank">tutorial</a> by Miss Mustard Seed that tells you everything you need to know about the waxing process.</p> <p>So now I’m one happy homemaker with the checkerboard table I always wanted, and those checker matches are pretty frequent around here…</p> <p><a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-SnMdqaMcGlw/Ucn3dj_5tsI/AAAAAAAALrQ/kyMJ79NtLxY/s1600-h/DSC_0050%252520%2525282%252529%25255B5%25255D.jpg"><img title="DSC_0050 (2)" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px" border="0" alt="DSC_0050 (2)" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-uVuG0UAZfbc/Ucn3d5KVoeI/AAAAAAAALrY/pvSV8KqOVU8/DSC_0050%252520%2525282%252529_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="640" height="428"></a></p> Tasha B.http://www.blogger.com/profile/05644123124805798981noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9191331405854961627.post-19218299194295613442013-06-18T20:14:00.001-07:002013-06-18T20:14:06.010-07:00newsflash: great find<p> </p> <p>I was super surprised and delighted to find <a href="http://www.target.com/p/spritz-disposable-straw/-/A-14244751#prodSlot=medium_1_5&term=paper+straws" target="_blank">these</a> at Target a while back…</p> <p><a href="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-y0rOVi7_ICA/UcEh91gFN9I/AAAAAAAALpw/myG_f6V_T2o/s1600-h/DSC_1255%25255B5%25255D.jpg"><img title="DSC_1255" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px" border="0" alt="DSC_1255" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-8n6yneCPCtY/UcEh-bE3P7I/AAAAAAAALp4/s80UQgUv4jY/DSC_1255_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="640" height="426"></a></p> <p><a href="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-r9FE2jeIdSo/UcEh-5M3FqI/AAAAAAAALqA/dQjood_8lHc/s1600-h/DSC_1256%25255B11%25255D.jpg"><img title="DSC_1256" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px" border="0" alt="DSC_1256" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-iAT6CREJl0w/UcEh_MjOZcI/AAAAAAAALqI/jSeltblQFTI/DSC_1256_thumb%25255B11%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="640" height="426"></a></p> <p>Only $1.99! It takes place every year in Spokane, WA. This time hubby had some plans on Sunday, so I had to simplify the trip and just stay at my mom’s place about half way there, and do only Saturday at the show.</p> <p>And believe it or not, I was okay with that. I’m getting pretty good at navigating this event. I have enough thrifting expertise that I can really be picky about what I buy. And I’ve seen so much of it on Pinterest already. It used to be so overwhelming with all the vintage stuff and new ideas, to pass by anything I loved seemed like saying goodbye to my one true love. But now I can say, “Nah, I see those in thrift stores for less than that price…” or, “I saw that idea on Pinterest – I can make one…” It was nice to walk away with some of my alloted budget leftover this year. </p> <p>…some vignettes from the sale…</p> <p><a href="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-lm5g6mgiC0s/UbHwF0XhUsI/AAAAAAAALcA/4uW9_mwMOfk/s1600-h/DSC_00045.jpg"><img title="DSC_0004" style="border-left-width: 0px; Bad blogger.</p> <p> </p> <p>Although I am growing accustomed to the vintage, farmey madness that is the Farm Chicks sale, it still does not disappoint. They were my first purchase, at my favorite booth. One right in the first bay that has mass quantities of vintage quilts, table cloths, boots, belts, alpha and numeric items, and then random items like these locker baskets in bulk. I bought the last three yellow ones. Ladies were swarming the pile like bees, carrying off armloads of them. I didn’t even have to use my elbows though; I just swooped in with the speed of many gazelles and grabbed them up. </p> <p>Yellow locker baskets - $10/each.
